Does NDHS provide culturally safe support for Aboriginal people?

Absolutely. Cultural safety is foundational to our NT services. This means: employing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff; consulting with Elders and community leaders; respecting cultural protocols, kinship systems, and obligations; providing interpreters for language speakers; understanding and respecting connection to Country; and adjusting services around cultural and sorry business. We're committed to self-determination—you lead, and we support in ways that work for you and your community.

How does NDIS psychosocial support work in remote NT communities?

Accepted Answer

For remote communities, we use a flexible approach. This might include: regular outreach visits (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly depending on location); telehealth support between visits; training and employing local community members as support workers; working with community health centres and Aboriginal health services; and coordinating with remote housing and other services. We recognise that 'mainstream' NDIS service models don't always fit remote contexts, so we adapt to what works for each community.

What languages can NDHS support workers communicate in?

Our NT team includes speakers of various languages, and we engage interpreters as needed. While we can't guarantee a speaker of every language, we work hard to ensure communication works. We use Aboriginal Interpreter Service (AIS) interpreters, work with bilingual community members, use visual communication tools, and spend time building relationships so communication improves over time. If language is a barrier for you, let us know your needs and we'll find a solution.

How does SIL work in Darwin vs. Alice Springs?

In both Darwin and Alice Springs, NDHS operates SIL homes with 24/7 support. Darwin properties are designed for tropical living—air conditioning, ceiling fans, outdoor undercover areas. Alice Springs homes are built for desert climate—good insulation, air conditioning, and consideration for extreme temperatures. Both locations have staff who understand the local community, climate, and lifestyle. We also have connections to local services, activities, and support networks specific to each region.

Can family members be involved in my NDIS support?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and we encourage it where you want that involvement. Family and kinship networks are central to many NT participants' lives. With your consent, family members can: attend meetings and planning sessions; provide input on your goals and preferences; be present during support sessions; receive information about your support (with your permission); and help make decisions about your care. Some participants also have family members as paid NDIS support workers. We work within whatever family structure works for you.

What is the process for accessing NDIS in the Northern Territory?

To access NDIS in the NT: 1) Check eligibility—you need to be under 65, an Australian citizen/permanent resident, and have a permanent disability that affects daily life. 2) Gather evidence—medical reports, assessments, and letters from treating professionals. 3) Submit an access request to the NDIA—this can be done online, by phone, or with help from a Local Area Coordinator (LAC). 4) The NDIA makes a decision (usually 21 days). 5) If approved, you have a planning meeting to develop your NDIS plan. NDHS can provide information and support at any stage—contact us for guidance.

Yes, we provide support on Aboriginal community lands where we have the appropriate permissions and relationships. This includes remote communities, outstations, and town camps. We always seek permission to enter communities, work with local governance structures, and ensure our presence is welcomed. Some communities we visit regularly; others we work with through partnerships with local organisations. The NT's climate—tropical Top End and desert Centre—creates specific challenges we plan for. Our approach includes: air-conditioned SIL homes and transport; scheduling outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day (early morning, evening); wet season and cyclone planning for the Top End; heat safety protocols for staff and participants; ensuring participants have access to cool spaces and adequate hydration; and adjusting support during extreme weather events. Our NT staff understand these challenges and plan services accordingly.
